Hot Bonus Rooms

As the temperature climbs north of 90 degrees, many homeowners in Boise will see the temperature of their bonus room upstairs get even hotter than outside. It’s a common problem and it’s very hard to know exactly what’s causing the issue. Will more insulation help? What about an attic fan with more attic ventilation, window tinting, a new air conditioner? The truth is every home is different and so is the improvement that will have the best result. But with that said, insulation is usually insufficient to keep the heat out. Even in newer construction, there are areas where the insulation does not meet code. Even if the amount of insulation is adequate, the installation and quality are poor. A second general rule of thumb; attic fans generally do not improve the efficiency or comfort and they do not qualify for energy efficient tax credits. As a contractor with energy audit training, Ecohomes can pinpoint the true problems and make improvements that resolve them permanently. The best part is that the money saved on energy bills, tax and utility incentives virtually pay for the improved comfort of your home. Vinyl Windows vs. Aluminum

Years ago aluminum windows were considered the primary alternative to wood windows.  In fact aluminum is still often used in commercial buildings.  Aluminum windows are long-lasting and allow for easy glass replacement. Also, aluminum windows help keep noise to a minimum because they have a heavier mass.  Although a vinyl window with three panes of glass will reduce noise far better than a double pane aluminum window.

However, the disadvantages are that aluminum windows will corrode over time, especially when exposed to the weather and moisture. Rooms like bathrooms and kitchens are not ideal locations for aluminum windows.  The other drawback with aluminum windows compared to vinyl windows is the vinyl frame does not conduct heat as easily making vinyl windows more comfortable and energy efficient.

Most homeowners don’t realize that replacement siding is an excellent opportunity to make their home more energy efficient.  It may come as a surprise to know  that when replacing siding in Boise, the Dept. of Energy recommends and R5 insulation be incorporated into the siding upgrade.
